Magic Ship is one shop in Vancouver, BC, working remotely with clients worldwide. We are not a partner, reseller, or certified vendor of Temporal Technologies - we just build with this.
What Temporal is
Temporal runs workflow code as durable executions: every step is recorded, and if the process dies the workflow resumes where it stopped, on another machine if necessary. Activities carry retry policies and timeouts, workflows can sleep for days, and a UI shows the full history of every run. SDKs exist for Go, Java, TypeScript, Python, and others.
How we use it
We use it for long multi-step work where losing progress is unacceptable: ingesting a large corpus, multi-stage extraction with human review in the middle, integrations that call third-party APIs with bad days. Retries and backoff are declared per activity instead of hand-rolled around each call. When a run fails, its history shows the exact step and input, which turns most incident calls into a five-minute answer.
Where it is the wrong choice
It brings a server or a cloud account, workers to run, and determinism rules that constrain how workflow code is written - a real learning cost for a small team. For a job that takes seconds and can simply be retried, a Postgres-backed queue is the proportionate answer.
