What Drizzle ORM is
Drizzle is a TypeScript ORM whose API mirrors SQL rather than hiding it. Schemas are declared in TypeScript, result types are inferred from them, and drizzle-kit generates migrations from the schema diff. It runs on Node, Bun, and edge runtimes with no separate query engine process.
How we use it
We pick Drizzle when the project runs on an edge runtime, or when the queries are the interesting part - window functions, CTEs, a pgvector similarity search with metadata filters in the same statement. Generated migrations are read and edited before they run; a diff tool does not get to write production DDL unreviewed.
Where it is the wrong choice
It gives you less than Prisma does: no equivalent of Prisma Studio, and relational queries are more verbose. On a team that is not comfortable in SQL, that verbosity is a real cost and Prisma is the kinder default.
