What AI SDK is
The AI SDK is a TypeScript library that puts a single interface in front of many model providers, with streaming, tool calling, and schema-validated structured output. Its UI package handles the client side of a streaming chat surface in React, Svelte, and Vue.
How we use it
It is our default when the model call lives in a TypeScript app: switching providers is close to a one-line change, which makes an honest bake-off cheap to run. Structured output is validated with a schema, so a malformed response is caught at the boundary and retried instead of flowing into the UI. Streaming from a server route into a component is a handful of lines rather than a hand-rolled event parser.
Where it is the wrong choice
A common interface lags provider-specific features: prompt caching controls, thinking settings, and new tool types tend to arrive late or partly, so anything depending on them wants the vendor SDK directly. It is also TypeScript only, which rules it out for a Python service.
