What Pydantic AI is

Pydantic AI is a Python agent framework where tools, dependencies, and results are Pydantic models, so validation and schema generation come from the type hints. It puts one interface in front of several model providers and supports streaming plus retries when a result fails validation. It integrates with Pydantic Logfire for tracing.

How we use it

On Python services we use it when the output has to be a specific shape - an extraction, a classification, a filled form - because a validation failure is retried with the error attached rather than passed quietly downstream. Dependency injection makes tools testable: the database handle a tool uses is supplied by the test. The result reads like ordinary typed Python instead of a framework DSL.

Where it is the wrong choice

It is younger than the alternatives and the API has moved between releases, so it needs pinning and the occasional migration. For long runs that need durable checkpoints and human approval in the middle, LangGraph is further along.
