Astro

Static-first web framework for content sites.

Magic Ship is one shop in Vancouver, BC, working remotely with clients worldwide. We are not a partner, reseller, or certified vendor of Astro Technology Company - we just build with this.

What Astro is

Astro is a web framework that renders pages to HTML at build time and ships no JavaScript unless a component asks for it. Interactive islands can be written in React, Svelte, or Vue and hydrated one at a time. Content collections give typed access to Markdown and data files in the repo.

How we use it

We use Astro for marketing sites, documentation, and any surface whose content belongs in a repo rather than a database - this site included. Collections get a schema, so a bad frontmatter field fails the build instead of shipping. The output is a plain directory of HTML and assets, which keeps the deploy target interchangeable rather than tied to one host.

Where it is the wrong choice

It is the wrong choice for an app with per-user state on every route. Once most of the page is interactive you are fighting the islands model, and Next.js or a plain React app is the better fit.
