Supabase

Postgres with auth, storage, and APIs attached.

Magic Ship is one shop in Vancouver, BC, working remotely with clients worldwide. We are not a partner, reseller, or certified vendor of Supabase - we just build with this.

What Supabase is

Supabase is an open-source platform built around Postgres: authentication, REST and realtime APIs that respect row-level security, file storage, and edge functions. pgvector is available, and the whole stack can be self-hosted with Docker as well as used hosted.

How we use it

It is our fast path to a product with accounts: auth, row-level security policies, and a database on day one instead of week three. Retrieval tables use pgvector in the same database, so a policy that restricts a document restricts its chunks by construction. Migrations live in the repo and run through the CLI, so the hosted project is never the source of truth.

Where it is the wrong choice

Row-level security is powerful and easy to get subtly wrong, and a policy gap is a data leak, so it needs tests rather than review alone. Teams that need full control over Postgres extensions, or a self-hosted deployment with vendor support, are usually better off on plain managed Postgres.
