Magic Ship is one shop in Vancouver, BC, working remotely with clients worldwide. We are not a partner, reseller, or certified vendor of PostgreSQL Global Development Group - we just build with this.
What PostgreSQL is
PostgreSQL is an open-source relational database with strong transactional guarantees, JSONB for semi-structured data, full-text search, and an extension system covering vectors, time series, and queues. Every major cloud offers it managed.
How we use it
Nearly every project we ship keeps its state here, embeddings included, so retrieval joins against business data with no second system to keep in sync. Schema changes go through reviewed migrations, and a seeded local database plus a verification script is what gets a new developer a working stack from one command. It serves as the job queue too, before anyone adds a broker.
Where it is the wrong choice
It scales up long before it scales out: sharding is not built in, and genuinely analytical workloads belong in a column store rather than on a read replica. Very large vector indexes strain it as well, which is the point at which a dedicated store gets considered.
