What Mistral is
Mistral AI is a French company that ships hosted models through its own API and also releases open-weight models under permissive licences. The open line includes small dense models, mixture-of-experts models, and code-specialised variants. EU hosting is available, which matters when data residency is written into the contract.
How we use it
We consider Mistral when EU data residency is a requirement, or when a client wants weights they can keep after the engagement ends. The small open models are good candidates for the extraction and classification steps of a pipeline, leaving the frontier model to handle only the hard final step. As with any provider, the choice comes from running the client's eval set.
Where it is the wrong choice
In our testing its hosted models trail the frontier labs on long-horizon reasoning and multi-tool agent work, so it is not our default for the reasoning core of an agent. The ecosystem of integrations around it is thinner too, which shows up as more glue code.
