Gemini

Long-context models, and the default inside Google Cloud.

Magic Ship is one shop in Vancouver, BC, working remotely with clients worldwide. We are not a partner, reseller, or certified vendor of Google - we just build with this.

What Gemini is

Gemini is Google's multimodal model family, reachable through the Gemini API and through Vertex AI for Google Cloud customers. The models take text, images, audio, and video, and the larger context windows are among the biggest on offer. Tool calling and constrained JSON output are supported.

How we use it

We reach for Gemini when a task is genuinely multimodal - scanned PDFs, screenshots, recordings - and when a client's data already lives in Google Cloud, where Vertex keeps it. It also gets a slot in bake-offs: the same prompts and the same eval set run against Claude, GPT, and Gemini before anything becomes the default.

Where it is the wrong choice

A long context window is not free accuracy. On our retrieval work, pasting a whole corpus into the window still loses to targeted retrieval with reranking, and it costs more per call. The API surface also differs enough from the OpenAI-shaped ones that switching later is real work.
