Magic Ship is one shop in Vancouver, BC, working remotely with clients worldwide. We are not a partner, reseller, or certified vendor of Pinecone - we just build with this.
What Pinecone is
Pinecone is a hosted vector database. Indexes scale with usage, and it supports metadata filtering, namespaces for separating tenants, and both dense and sparse vectors for hybrid retrieval. There is no cluster to run and no index build to hand-tune.
How we use it
We use it when a team wants retrieval in production without taking on another database to operate, or when the corpus is large enough that pgvector index maintenance would become somebody's job. Namespaces map to tenants, so isolation is enforced by the store rather than by a WHERE clause we have to get right in every query path.
Where it is the wrong choice
It is closed and hosted, so vectors leave the client's infrastructure and the cost model is the vendor's to change; for regulated clients that ends the discussion. Keeping the index in sync with the source of truth is also your problem, because the documents live in a different database.
